Mobius Strip

Mobius Strip for everyone.

Take for example an A4 paper, you have two sides: the top side and the bottom side. You can also imagine a sphere with an outer side (surface) and an inner side (surface). So it is normal a surface with two sides and I think it is quite strange to imagine a surface with only a side. Yes it is not a joke but it is the Moebius strip. It was created by a German mathematician called August Ferdinand Mobius in the 1858.

Adolf Neumann: A. F. Mobius

One of the most famous depiction of Mobius strip is by the Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher in the 1963 with “Mobius Strip II”.

You can cover all the surface of Mobius strip with your finger without removing it from the strip; so it is the demonstration it is a single side surface!

Make your own Mobius strip

It is easy to create a Mobius strip; just few passages:

  • Take a paper strip (length about 15 centimeters)
  • Half-twist one end of the strip
  • Join the two endings and you have completed your Mobius strip

Where is it used?

  • As recording-tapes or computer printer (old printers) cartridge because you double the playing time merging the two side in only one side
  • Belt used for drive train (transmission) in the engine to distribute the usage on double side
