Drug Slang

Most illegal drugs are commonly referred to using slang, or street names, that can be confusing for the uniformed. Here is a guide to drug slang that both informed parents and curious teens should find helpful.

Marijuana:

The most commonly used illicit drug, marijuana is the dried bud of the female cannabis plants. The drug is usually smoked but can also be taken orally if properly prepared. Marijuana can produce feelings of euphoria, altered perceptions, and sleepiness. Common street names include weed, grass, pot, bud, dope, ganja, mary jane, aunt mary, Buddha, tree, chronic, gonj, grandpa's medicine, green and herb.

Cocaine:

Made from coca leaves, cocaine is a powerful stimulant in the form of a white powder which can be injected or snorted. Cocaine that has been converted into a smokable form(a process referred to as freebasing) is called "crack cocaine", or more commonly just "crack." Common slang for cocaine includes blow, white girl, nose candy, snow and dust.

Heroin:

Heroin, an opiate, has effects similar to that of morphine. Usually injected, it gives the relaxes the user and causes feelings of euphoria and sleepiness. Heroin is often called smack, dope, brown sugar, junk and brown.

LSD:

LSD stands for lysergic acid diethylamide. It is a powerful hallucinogen, altering the user's perceptions and sense of reality. Street names for LSD include acid, lucy, microdots and tab.

Amphetamines:

Amphetamines are synthetic stimulants with effects similar to that of cocaine. The user experiences excitement, euphoria, and energetic. There are many types of amphetamines, including methamphetamines which can be produced using household chemicals. Common street names include meth, ice, speed, crank, go, glass, tweak, amp, poor man's coke, zip and crystal.
