10 Words That May be Tricky to Use in Your Writing

10 unusual or even unnecessary words that might not quite fit into your article.

  1. Antidisestablishmentarianism

The belief which opposes removing the tie between church and state. I once used this for a word puzzle for the children. How many shorter words could they make from it? Kept them busy for hours…unfortunately, it didn't take them long to spot the inappropriate word that could be made from the letters.
  2. Atrabilious

Gloomy, morose, bad-tempered or irritable. Surely it would be easier to use one of those words instead… <
  3. Farinaceous

Meaning - having a mealy texture. Who would use this word? Chefs? Scientists? Hmmm…
  4. Flageolet

A high-pitched musical instrument of the recorder family. And I always thought it was a kind of bean…which apparently it is. What do you know - I was right!
  5. Floccinaucinihilipilification

Twenty-nine letters long and often spelt incorrectly! It means the act of dismissing something as useless or trivia1, so I guess, meaning-wise, it would be easy to use it but seriously, who in their right mind would say “he had a floccinaucinihilipilification of wealth” instead of “he thought wealth was unimportant.”!
  6. Honorificabilitudinitatibus

    Means “with honour”. Quite.
  7. Obdiplostemonous

Having two sets of stamens, with the outer series opposite the petals and the inner series alternating with them. I'm guessing there's not much use for this word even if you are a horticulturist.
  8. Vomitorium

An access passage in a Roman theatre. What happened to simply using the word “passage” or “corridor”? The question, “What was a Vomitorium used for?” came up in our pub quiz last week. I'll leave the answers to your imagination!
  9. Zenzizenzizenzic

The eight power of a number. Calling all mathematicians….
  10. Ziggurat

An ancient Mesopotamian temple in the shape of a pyramidal tower. I like this word…

After I'd finished researching this article, I really felt as if I'd improved my vocabulary. I'm not sure if I'll ever use these words in my writing but I might be able to impress my friends with them!
