Revolution

The change, experiences and lessons learned of a teenager.

Life is a journey. In fact, it can deliver lessons as well as shape people's character. My journey has allowed me to explore myself as well as alter my attitude towards life in a more positive way.

I moved from Jakarta to Germany when I was seven years old; here I experienced my first uncomfortable but also remarkable journey.

Firstly, of course, I had to familiarize myself with the German language. When I came to school, I did not even understand one German word. I could not start creating friendships, sharing experiences or even identify with the material. Therefore I received German lessons and there I met my first best Russian friend in Germany; she also could not speak German well. With the assistance of the German teacher as well as with the help of a friend who was in a comparable situation, my feeling of isolation was alleviated. Although many other German people discriminated and underestimated me, my affable best friend still supported me in many ways. Thus I realized that even one person around you can transform the worst situation to a better one.

In addition my parents assisted me not to lose my identity. I once deliberated to change my Asian character, attitude as well as culture to a western one. But fortunately my parents reminded me to respect and accept my Asian roots by speaking Indonesian language everyday, sharing sufficient family times and experiences and of course remaining to carry out Chinese events, such as the Chinese New Year. Having experienced Chinese events, I acknowledged that I feel comfortable of being a Chinese, since I recognized that there are always positive sides of everything. Although German citizens underestimate Asian natives, still I explored that Asian people are more cooperative, welcoming, decent and also have a closer, stronger bond with their families.

However, I did not possess eagerness or fervor in any academic subject. This perspective revolutionized as I moved to Indonesia again. I entered the Ipeka International Christian School. Ever since, I discerned my buried passion for Business Studies, Economics as well as English. Additionally, I discovered my hidden talent in Business Studies and I also was encouraged to enrich my assiduousness, critical thinking skills as well as enthusiasm to broaden my knowledge in Business Studies. I have never expected to score well in any scholastic subject, but the journey has permitted me to experience it. As well, I found many cooperative, accommodating as well as altruistic friends. In struggling times, they did not resigned on me. This behaviour trained me to be strong and optimistic. Therefore, I explored that people are able to influence you in many ways; two of them are varying people's character and view towards life.

Nevertheless, my parents have other expectations. They push me to pursue an education in science, or more specifically in a medical field; since they consider that social sciences are less prestigious than technical science. I once listened to them and considered to alter my goal to be an entrepreneur or Chief Executive Officer. But since I read Jennifer Lopez's profile, I realized that her parents also forced her to become a lawyer; but instead she fulfilled her vision to become a singer as well as an actress. Not to mention, that she belongs to one of the most talented, most awarded Latina in the show business and has spread inspiration to the world to follow your own hope. I respect my parent's advice, but I also discovered that pursuing my expectation to be an entrepreneur may modify people's perspective towards social science. Thus, my target to continue my education in “Business” is to change the world's point of view: that social science acquires an equivalent value as technical science.

From my journey, I realized to be open minded to experience all opportunities that you never expect to occur. Furthermore, I also acknowledged that people in your environment are able to empower you as well as shape your character to a better one.
