On behalf of what I believe to be the best interests of the students at Shelton High School I propose several slight changes to several current policies.
ID Policy
There is no denying that the policy will be flawed in almost any manner that can be thought up, for example, lanyards can pose a safety issue and are also unable to be checked closely by any passerby, so any person who knows what the ID looks like could feasibly come up with a halfway decent forgery that can fool passing teachers, not from negligence but sheer inability to multitask to the extreme necessary for it to be a complete success. I instead suggest door checks of IDs by security and maybe other teachers as well at each entrance. Every station (of the three) will be equipped with two people a lock-box and a laptop computer with the school directory on it, the idea goes as follows:
With ID
- Student enters building, shows ID to person at the security check
- Student returns ID to his or her pocket wallet or purse etc. and don't have to worry about it until the next day.
Without ID (ID at "Home")
- Student enters building, fails to show ID
- One member of the security team takes the student off to the side
- Security member checks name and picture
- if a student lets pass with a small fine, (25 to 50 cents)
Without ID (ID in School)
- 1-4 same as above
- 5 If student retrieves the ID and shows it to the security desk or the main office fine will be lifted provided the student hasn't made a habit of leaving the ID in his/her locker.
Checkpoints would be at the main entrance and one at each corner before the main stairwell in the bus-loop, more can be added at main entrance if needed.
This also leads into the next issue, locked doors until 7:15
Doors Locked until 7:15
While presently this constitutes as a minor annoyance this policy will inevitably be changed once rainy/cold weather begins. Because of the early times bus students arrive they will be waiting outside for the doors to open. I feel this can be partly handled by opening the above security check points at 7:00 allowing students in at any time and thinning out mass crowding of the checkpoint.
iPods
While seeming like a distraction many students use IPods to keep from being disturbances after tests and during study halls when they do not have work to do. While as an administrator you might not recognize the advantage given by iPods but in the few days of school I have heard several teachers say that they did enjoy IPods in students hands during study halls and after tests because it, "Kept students quiet and kept them from distracting the other students work." Of course this is a rule that I feel should be placed under the discretion of the teachers in their respective classes.
The ideas above are MINE, but I feel that they are beneficial to many other students and that many people will agree with them.
