High School: Learning Experience or Popularity Contest?

Questioning why craving popularity and wanting to be part of the "in" cliques is so important to today's school students.

When kids are in school often "geeks" are not favored among the class elite, however in today's fast paced world where people are often obsessed with their computers and Ipods these formerly under appreciated people have found a niche.

Being a geek is not so bad in today's society, after all Bill Gates is one of the most well known geeks in the world. A famous company that has gained a reputation for their uncanny ability as technology wizzes is known as Geeksquad. Who would have thought that the "popular" crowd would become so reliant on  those they used to shun? The irony does not escape me.

Nowadays the tables have turned, but nonetheless often in the quest to be popular in High School a kid is appreciated more for having the latest version of Ipod than for their minds.

When I was growing up, I always laughed at the popularity contest that High School can be. My philosophy has always been, be who you are, the worst anyone can do is hate you for it. In the social climate of High school it is no wonder students are stressed. Along with the expectations of families and teachers, students are often stigmatized by their peers.

Besides geeks there are many other groups that are stigmatized, for some, even though it's "just" High School they take their peers criticism to heart. The reasons why vary from person to person but it comes down to society and people craving acceptance.

High School should be about learning, excelling, and growing into a person that can have a productive future. Parents....remind your kids, there's more to life than High School, the less they focus on being with the in crowd and the more they focus on fulfilling their goals for life and education, the less strenuous and more happy their High school experience will be.

I heard it said once this way, "fame may be addictive, but it's far from satisfying, so focus on the more important things." Thanks all for reading.

Good article. I was (and probably still am) a geek. I had glasses AND braces, hated football, and I was in marching band! Kids can be cruel. I was 100 pounds in my freshman year in high school (1982), and I was a very good runner. By the time I was in the 11th grade, I was 137 pounds, bench pressing 275 pounds, curling 150 pounds, AND won the school talent contest with a piano composition of my own. Funny how the same people (who wouldn't give me the time of day) suddenly changed their tune. The Bible does state that the meek shall inherit the earth. People can be so judgmental, but as the Bible states: Judge not lest you be judged.
