College Is One Of The Most Fun Times Of Life

A basic survivor's guide to enjoying your new college lifestyle.

Look forward to college, because it will enrich your life in many ways. It is an exciting time to get to grow, learn and have fun with friends. Cherish the time you spend in school, because college will give you not only the book knowledge that you are paying for, but also life experience of being on your own. Here are some tips for the soon-to-be college freshman.

Dorm room survival kit

Things that really helped me out while studying are: noise-canceling headphones (for studying during noisy dorm parties,) a coffeemaker (major necessity to anyone who loves coffee,) small refrigerator, laundry bag and basket, extra pillows, first aid kit, slippers, a fan, stackable plastic crates (for using as extra shelving on your desk, or for hauling stuff when you move,) stereo, electric broom, and whatever else makes you feel as comfortable as possible. Non-perishable food, a can opener and laundry detergent are also good to have, especially if your dorm isn't close to a grocery store and you don't have a car.

Get out and explore your new environment

Talk to people, visit the buildings on campus and attend parties. You don't have to drink at parties, back when I was in college; I used to carry the same beer around all night (to avoid others shoving another one in my hand) until someone brought Diet Pepsi or something non-alcoholic. Drinking didn't appeal to me but I went to be with my friends. We all would hang out and listen to the band then go out for breakfast late at night. Spend time in the student union and bookstore. Just allow yourself to know the campus well, so that it will feel more at home to you.

When everything is new and an “unknown,” it can be more intimidating. So, don't hide in your room. Check it all out. Once in school, you will naturally find friends as you get to know more people. Don't be shy, allow yourself to break out of your shell if you are and try new things like going to movies, get-togethers and off-campus to see the sights in town with friends. Go with the flow and enjoy the company of others.

Have fun but not too much fun

Remember, you are there to get your work done. Use your time wisely, and do homework in a timely manner so later you won't have to pull an all-nighter to get it done for class. Trust me, I've been there myself and feeling worn out in class the next day isn't fun. Too many all-nighters and not enough food gave me a bad case of Mononucleosis, and that took my energy and made me miss a semester's worth of class. Take care of your health, because if you do like I did and abuse it with lack of sleep and nutrition, it will eventually catch up with you.

Don't leave valuables and laundry unattended.

After having clothes stolen out of washers and dryers in school a few times, I learned the hard way not to leave my laundry unattended. There are many great people out thee, but then there are others who think nothing of stealing your stuff. A friend of mine lost his leather gym bag because he left it unattended. Use common sense with your belongings and don't put them in harm's way. Expensive laptops and other electronics should stay with you or locked in a locker when not in use. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Enjoy college, and your new freedom to become the adult you want to be. It is an exciting time to know yourself better and start a new life. Your parents are only a cell-phone call away. Send them photos and messages to let them know that you're thinking of them. This is an adjustment for them, too. In no time at all, you will be acclimated and ready to take the world on, with your new career. So, take the time to work hard and have fun. You've got one life, so live it to the fullest.
