Tried and proven examination strategies that can be of tremendous help to those who are intimidated in this area.

Examinations are used by authorities to determine the proficiency of individuals to operate competently at established levels in societies all over the world.

The very thought of failure can generate stress that can be detrimental to ones health.

However there are strategies that we can use consistently and be successful in examinations.

I have developed and applied these recommended strategies with considerable successes over the past twenty years and hope you may find them useful in your pursuit of academic excellence.

They are:

  • Develop and maintain a positive attitude towards the examination - never accept failure
  • Acquire all the materials required to study for the exams (examples include textbooks, past papers, and tutorials)
  • Be a regular visitor to the library
  • Cover the entire syllabus so that you can respond to all the questions
  • Read each chapter before it is covered in class
  • Read all notes at least three times after each class
  • Establish a discussion group
  • Train your memory regularly
  • Example- Try to remember the license plates of certain amount of cars you have passed on your way home or the items seen in a shop window you
  • Write down all you can remember after reading and then compare your performance with what is in the text then repeat the process as often as possible until you have scored 100%
  • When doing Math make, sure you answer all the questions provided at the end of each chapter
  • N.B Proficiency in Math can only be achieved through regular practice
  • Study Math and other numerical subjects early in the morning when you brain is fresh
  • Search for real life examples where the topic you are studying can be applied- this will help to strengthen your understanding
  • Take at least six hours sleep before the exam and resist the temptation to do last minute studying
  • N.B Treat your brain right and it will serve you well in the exams
  • For those who believe in prayer-Ask the Lord to bring back everything you have studied to your memory
  • Allocate equal times to each question and stick to it
  • Take at least five minutes to look at the paper and decide which ones you are going to answer and do the easiest one first to give your brain time to work efficiently and to build your confidence
  • Do not panic or you may lose concentration
  • Try to look over the paper in the last ten minutes if time permit
  • In cases where another exam is due, leave the area immediately and get more rest before doing any revision

Exams can be conquered regardless of the level you are as long as you have a strategic plan and stick to it.

I hope you enjoy reading this article and good luck in your pursuit of academic and other successes.
