Study Tips for Dummies

Straight A students are not born, they are made. Sure, being a genius would help, but it isn't the main factor for succeeding in class.

  1. As they say, genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. What you put in the assignment needs to be pretty good, but presentation, organisation and, hmmm, completing it, make the biggest difference.
  2. Get a diary. You could have Einstein's brains, but it won't help you if you're not organised. Buy a diary and start the day with writing down every subject you have that day. Then, AT THE END of every class, write what homework you got. If the teacher didn't give you any homework, just write "nil".
  3. Stationary up. It is near impossible to take any notes without a pencil. Buy two pencil cases. A large one and a small one. In the small one you should put two pencils, two pens, a sharpener, a highlighter, a hole puncher and a rubber. In the larger pencil case you will need coloured pencils, scissors, glue, spare pencils and pens and anything else you might need during the day. You will carry the small pencil case around with you and leave the big pencil case in your locker to bring to a subject that you will need a lot of stationary for, like art.
  4. Organise your locker. First, you will need to split your locker into at least two shelves if it isn't done for already. You can buy locker shelves at a lot of hardware stores. Then, buy a binder folder for every subject you have. Use a permanent marker to label every folder. Then, buy paper with holes to fit in your binder and put a bunch of it at the back of every binder. That paper will be your notes paper. Buy some dividers, so you can divide your binder into units of work, for example with history, you might divide your folder into the Middle Ages and Ancient Egypt. Every time you get a handout from your teacher, put it into the binder in its appropriate section. Having sheets floating around your locker is not good. Put the appropriate text books for each locker to the right of the binder. Then, you can just grab the binder and the text books and go to class.
  5. Be on time. Teachers hate it when you are late. This includes being late to class and with assignments. One tip for being on time is to carry more than one subjects books with you at one time, IF POSSIBLE! There is no point carrying so many books that you drop them all. You will only end up being later. Wear a watch so you know exactly when you need to be where. It helps to set out the books you need before class so you only have to pick them up and go.
  6. Make time to do your homework. Set out at least 2 hours every night for doing your homework. Don't plan anything in that time. Then, do your homework in a quiet room. Don't have any distractions in the room with you, this includes messenger, myspace and the TV.
  7. Stick to any plans you make. If you make a plan to organise yourself stick to it and don't put it off.

Good luck!
