Obviously no parent wants their little girl running around in daisy dukes and bikini tops all day. Or their fine young men promoting the use of drugs or alcohol with their clothing. This is true for most parents and any school you go into has some type of dress code in order to evade things like this. Some schools have opted to enforce uniform policies.
As a student I remember thinking that having uniforms would be a horrible idea. However, now that I am older I do feel that they might be slightly beneficial. For some students it would help with self-esteem issues and also might create a more serious environment for students to learn in. On the other hand we have a real sense of individualism in this country and forcing our students to ware uniforms just kind of breaks that spirit. It has also been found that uniforms do not necessarily decrease violence, alcohol consumption, drug use or smoking. Yet there are schools that credit uniforms for their drop in misconduct among students. Another argument is that enforcing dress codes is usually put in the hands of the teachers and this creates distractions and takes time away from learning.
While both sides have legitimate arguments I still personally feel that having uniforms is not always a good idea. If someone is going to act out in school they are going to do it no matter how they are dressed. Students behave the way they do because they are young and special regulations will not change that. Schools that claim they are doing better now that they have uniforms probably changed more than their dress codes. Obviously there were steps being taken to make the school better and the expectation probably changed through a series of modifications. So if school want things to run more smoothly they should try and work on other areas before making students conform as one.
