Modern-Day Students Have Too Much Homework

Do you ever wonder about the side effects of too much homework?

Modern day students have too much homework. This homework has negative effects on students that include stress, lack of social life, and lack of exercise.

Teens today are especially in a state of distress due to an excessive amount of homework. Stress can result in such things as insomnia, acne, and depression, which can lead to even more stress. Eventually stress and its side-effects will result in long-term problems and will negatively affect a student's life.

When teens are inside most of the time doing homework, they rarely get a chance to see or communicate with their friends. This can lead to the lack of a social life, which may prevent teens from developing normal intra personal and leadership skills. These skills will be useful or necessary later in life, and if a teen does not acquire them, they may have a hard time as an adult.

If a teen is constantly sitting down they will begin to lose fitness. Lack of exercise can cause obesity, heart disease, and loss of concentration. The two former are highly dangerous to physical health, and the latter is necessary for a student to properly function. Unfitness also comes with a multitude of other different and negative health problems.

In conclusion, too much homework results in negative side affects and traits in students. Educators should develop structured and organized homework systems to enable students to learn without the cons.

As a teacher, I can see both sides of this issue. What many people overlook is that excessive time spent on homework may not be the teacher's goal, but rather, a sign that a student is struggling and needs educational intervention.

Well, as a student, i think that too much homeowrk is being assigned.. I understand what the tutor is trying to say.. But.. i Think that having too much homework,. really doesnt help in many ways.. becuase it just causes boredom... And causes us students.. to not want to do our homework.

It causes loss of interest in learning. It makes us students HATE to learn new things...

well less homework gives us less time to exercize to have fun and it gives us kids and teachers a lack of social life which is not good at all.now im reasearching why kids in middle school dont get less homework, and i hope i find out why.and it also makes not do our homework at all.so less homework makes feel more free.it also makes not wanna go 2 school at all.so my prediction is that if we students get less homework we will be more into school.

thank u very much

I hate all the homework that i get. I go to bed so late and the next day i can't focus on anything. It is like working a double shift. less homework would make me enjoy my lif a lot more, and not dread the next day and all the new homework.

Just doing all the homework itself is stressful. But when a student(like myself) am working a full time job and a full time student, homework can be a hassle.

Well... I can see it from both sides of the coin as well. I am a teacher, and I have a child in elementary school. I think they are giving the LITTLE ones way too much so-called "homework". My son is up until at least 9 pm getting it done - and it does NOT mean he needs intervention. What it means is that HE has a teacher that is too lazy to do proper assessments, so she loads on "busy work" as homework so she has something to base a grade on for report cards. I have argued about this with the school all year - to no avail. I also watch other teachers load on homework, and all of it is "junk" in my book.

Where are the assignments and projects - hands-on stuff that fire up a student's interest and make them WANT to learn!? Where are the teachers that take an interest in each student and assign tasks that are relevant to that student's needs? Too many schools are forcing kids into some "normal" mold - and their perception of "normal" only fits about 2% of the student population.

As teachers we should reassess why we give "homework", what it consists of, and how we can minimize the load while maximizing learning. As parents, we need to fight the schools that are allowing this overload to stress, depress, and anger our children.

I agree too much homework is given. I believe a certain amount of homework should be assigned to students. But teachers have to think about it highschool kids and middle school kids have 5-6 classes sometimes 7 and most likely 4 out of the classes or more will have homework assigned. Not to mention do teachers even look at how heavy some of the textbooks are? To bring all those books home almost every day to do homework will most likely result in some stress if the student is trying hard to earn a c or higher. I am a student.

i agree fully with kim... if parents would just fight back with the school, sooner or later the school will get the point. I wish there were more brave parents out there who were not afraid to stand up for their children. I am a student who enjoys school because of the friends and what i am involved in. It is extremely hard to be involved though because of the load of homework. After I am done with dance, or one of my other clubs, I stay up way too late trying to get my homework finished. I am lucky to get 4 hours of sleep at night.
i really just don't see the point of homework... it causes stress, lack of sleep, depression, lack of outdoor activities and exercise, and most importantly it causes a lack of social skills.

I am an incoming 9th grade student and I already am getting hours of homework each night. So I think Kim is right, there's too much HW.

I am not against homework, it enables you to work, and learn. But as every excess en life, excess homework is bad. I am a student in 11th grade, first year of IB, and I believe I suffer from homework stress. Every day I am lucky I get some sleep, one day I just got 1 hour of sleep!. Almost every week I have to go to bed late at night and wake up early in the morning, around 3 am, to finish my homework. My sleeping schedules have been distorted and now I suffer from sleeping disorders. I spend the whole weekend doing homework, no time for doing anything else. Before, I used to exercise two hours every day, now I can\'t exercise. I suffer from eating disorders and anxiety and depression. All I want to do is lock up in my room, and isolate myself so I can do my homework. This is hurting my family already. The eating disorders are leading to more depression, and the isolation as well. I cannot concentrate as I used to, I even have to miss some days of school to finish the homework I could not finish over the weekend, because simply too much homework is assigned and I just hate it that my life revolves around homework. This adds up to extracurricular activities, such as MUN and after-school classes for completing CAS hours, prefect duties and higher level syllabuses. I really do not know if it is just me that is feeling so depressed and stressed or it is that there is too much homework. I see my peers complaining like me, and having little time to sleep. I even got to point where I started to have suicidal ideas, and crying, because of the eating disorders and the depression and the anxiety of losing control over my life. Even subjects like P.E stress me, because I used to be good, but now it stresses me that because of my lack of exercise, I cannot perform as well and my grades will fall. It is so hard to cope with everything I do not know how I will cope with university and med school. My friends are beginning to notice a change in my attitude, I am beginning to become again that cold girl, because in form III, my life was all about homework as well. But early this year, I relaxed a bit, began to have a more active social life, until homework began to catch up and I simply began to go back to that state of isolation. I like to get good grades and study, but simply, too much homework and all the disorders has caused depression and now it is harder for me to pay attention in class an grasp all the ideas. I feel I am less intelligent now. Homework should be controlled, not just given indiscriminately.

i think having homework leads to dropping out from not completeing it, too much stress. And ni time with family
#26 by Kim, Sep 27, 2008
I'm a high school student and I have so much homework that I have to spend at least 7 hours each week day doing homework. I got about 5 hours a day to sleep. The next school day I was usually so tired that I spent most of my time in class yawning and trying not to fall asleep. I have observed that students with too much homework tend to cheat by copying each other's homework. Also, I have to sacrifice my social life for homework. I don't even have time to play with my little brother anymore. During the weekend, I got double the homework amount. Sometimes I got too much homework that I have less time to study and review for coming tests. I believe that homework is good for students but in smaller amounts.

i passionately hate homework. i hate school as well and i have got friends. i can just about stand school but coming back home and knowing that you have a pile of homework to do before you actually can have free time is scary.

Wow! MAM it seems like you\\\'ve been through alot! I feel like HW is controlling my life. Especially English class. My English teacher gives out so many projects and wrtting assignments that I find it hard to concentrate on other subjects like Math Science etc... I am planning to speak with my teacher tommorow but she will likely refuse my offer. Oh well... Wish me luck!

Ok... well, I agree with some of the pople here about to much homework but sometimes homework can be helpful. Say in a subject, you are failing. Just do the homework, think about it, and get it right. Also, time management is a very hard thing for you guys as I can tell...

As a parent of a 4th grade student, I am very concerned about the amount of homework he has to do this year. It's as if a switch was flipped from 3rd to 4th grade in the amount of homework coming home. My son is a very good student & excells in math and reading but the volume of homework has him (and me) completely stressed out and we're only 8 weeks into the new school year. A 9 year old child should not be stressed about anything - they should be spending time being a kid!

I've already had a conversation with my sons teacher and she assured me that homework should not take more than 30 - 60 minutes per night. However, I believe she is only counting the "normal" daily homework she sends home (i.e. worksheets like math problems or spelling assignments). She is not considering the reading required to prepare a monthly book report, the daily practice for the violin (which is a school sponsored activity), the daily time they are supposed to spend doing their "math facts" and the handwriting practice they are supposed do.

By the time you add the other things to the "normal" daily homework assignments, you have at least 2-3 hours of homework for a 9 YEAR OLD!!! Can't wait to see what 5th grade has to offer!!!

If there are any teachers out there reading these posts - please consider the time you are stealing from the lives of these kids and their families. I'm certain being a teacher is a tough job and you are expected to achieve certain testing standards with your students - but piling on the homework isn't the way to
go.

Is this excessive homework trend the result of "No Child Left Behind?" If so, perhaps the government needs to rethink the flawed plan.

Well, I am a student and I\'ve always done well in school but I\'ve had a problem with homework. There\'s just too much! It\'s hard to find time to do homework, chores, sports, babysit, and others. If we had less homework it would help alot.
