Is homework necessary?

Is homework useful? Does it really help kids to study? Well, here are the opinion of me is homework necessary or not

What is the purpose of homework? All people can agree it is used to reinforce on what did the children learn during school. But is it really helpful for kids do spend time to do homework instead of doing what they should really do? Such as playing outside or learn to help doing chores? That’s look at the advantage and disadvantage of doing homework.

PROs

  1. Homework obviously helps kids study on what they did they learn during school. It can also some kids research and obtain some useful information which they might not know.
  2. Homework can also give kids a sense of responsibility; this is a very important thing that can affect kids growth during life. People do not responsibility often fail in life.
  3. Believe it of not, doing homework can actually be a way of exercising! Doing homework prevent kids from watching TV while eating snack and so forth. Also it is been proven that think can burn off calories.

CONs

  1. Homework prevents kids to learn and understand many things. For example, a child will never learn what is the true beauty of the nature if he is just sitting on a chair and doing homework all the time.
  2. Homework can make children to be sick and tired of school, many kids in the world despise school mainly because of homework. School is a very important thing in a kids life since it is the place where all kids’ education is received. Children dislike or even hating go to school can be a very bad thing.
  3. Homework can do some exercising, but compare to running around outside or playing some sports, the amount of calories burned during sitting on a chair and reading a book is laughable.
  4. Homework takes out fun out of kids’ life. Who want to sitting in side a beautiful day doing homework in their room instead of playing out side with their friends?
  5. Homework can also prevent the kids’ social skills. If a child is spending time at his house all day, obviously he is not going to have too many friends compare to the other kids who do play.
  6. Homework can damage a child’s eye. Now, more and more computer is required the use of a computer, if your child is sitting home all day in front of the computer, his/her eyes is going to be damaged over time and one day will need to wear glasses.
  7. Homework can make a child becoming what we call a “geek”. Geeks are people who are extremely intelligent but because they are spending home all they studying and doing work, they often do not know the fashion of the world. In a generally speaking, they are people with no lives.

As you can see, homework has more negative effects than positive effect on the children today. The positive aspect of homework can also replace by other things. Homework helps kids studying, but doesn’t studying help kids study even more? Responsibly can be gained through working, you can gain both working experience and responsibly while doing homework at a little cubicle. Homework exercising can be replaced by playing outside because playing burns more fat than doing homework. So if all positive effects of homework can replaced by not doing it, what is the point of doing homework?

I'm a sophmore in highschool and I work nearly 2-3 hours a night on homework that teachers sometimes don't even check or look at. I come home from 6 hours day of school to work 2-3 hours more on school wasting both time outside and stuff I want to do. I'm worn out. Sick and tired of it.

I am only 14.....in my second year of secondary.........but reading this article made me realise something.......i always thought that i hated school, but really i enjoy it , but its just the fact that after i have been at school from 9 to 4 i have to come home and do around 2 hours homework, every night.......for example....when a person works an average 9 hour shift they come home, realax and put their feet up.....and they dont have too do anything 'till their next day of work...then on the otherhand.....a student goes to school for 8 hours then they come home and they have 2 to 3 hours homework in front of them....i admit i havent been doing my homework the way i should according to my teachers but my social life and self esteem has rose dramatically..............whilst i notice people who put all their effort and dedicate all of their time to suceeding at school are people waithout many freinds, are overweight and have not got a social life.........i hope peopla can understand my point on this subject

HWRK doesnt have to consist of 2 to 4 'every' night. The 3 legged stool of learning is reading, concentration and application. Without one the others dont hold up. HMRK leans heavy on the application. If a student is not "practising" HMRK how does one expect to make it thru college unless your going for a bone head degree. People that excell in a good degree that lands them a good career have to work for it. A good degree requires a lot of studying thus a lot of HMRK. I wouldnt be making $ 100 K a year salary if i didnt do all the HMRK required during college. You wanna flip burgers or dig ditches for a living or join the professional workforce. People around the world are highly educated because they put inthe discipline (i.e.studying) to learn and to know it !! And they woudl give anyting to come to the USA to work in their profession. America is failing b/c there is no HMRK demand by the school systems. Pay for it now while your young so you dont have to pay for it later when it is too hard.

to me homework is way well to much i wouldn't mind it if there was way less but right now i have been writing a report on homework and i have already spent 3 hours on it.

plz tell me the average you spend on HW a night
#43 by Joe, Jan 9, 2008
I am 17 and in High School, we have 8 classes, 4 classes a day with alternating "A" and "B" days. That means we have 2 days to finish homework, right? Well, apparently the teachers use that as an excuse to give us ridiculous amounts of homework a night. I can get A's easily on any school work or test, but because we get so much homework, my grades are ranging from 95+ (in classes with little/no homework) to 50's (With classes that give huge amounts of homework, too much to keep up with). Homework is just pointless, its just causes extra stress and wastes time until you don't even try to finish it anymore.

i am in 7th grade in Massachusetts. I have a 6.5 hour school day then come home with 2 hours of homework. i am only in 7th grade. I can also never get the 8 hours of sleep I am suppose to. I have learned that if we get to sleep until we wake up without an alarm clock we will learn better. If kids aren't getting enough sleep what is the point to do all this work if we won't even learn it well?

Homework is good to do, but when you have too much to do, you miss out on enjoying yourselves, playing with your friends. If you have too much it can sometimes make you go to bed late so you will be tired the next day. You need to relax and have some time of your own. Homework is good, you just shouldn't be given too much!

look homework sux....it may give you extra practice but there is almost no evidence that homework helps elementary school students achieve academic successand little evidence that it helps older students.it is also proven that homework is a hidden cause of childhood obesity. yeah i know i sound like a geek n all but ive got an essay to do..... if anyone has a comment...comment....

homework helps almost nothing its like taking an Exame you train it before going to exame and when you've got your grate and know you dont need to do that exame anymore so you just ignore that subject again :P i doubt any grown ups can remember what they had to answer under there Final exam in English . MAth and so on..

i personly almost never done homework and barly been in school in like since 1st grade and i can still keep up (ofc with some holes) but never really been in school an entire year.. so i would say its totaly unneccesary

A day in the life of my ten year old son. Wake-up :) it\'s 6:30, time to get ready for school. Hurry, quit talking, eat faster, brush your teeth, give me a kiss, get out to the car or you\'ll miss the bus. Boring bus ride for 30 min. Wait around outside for the bell at 8:25, Sit at desk & don\'t talk or move, be seen and not heard. Recess, Back to class, sit in desk again. Short lunch, repeat. Maybe, Gym. 2:15 pm dismissed. Long boring bus ride home. Meet Mom at bus stop walk home 30 min. in all weather carrying heavy back-pack full of assigned homework. Put away stuff, have a snack, take break to amp up for, \"The Battle of the Homework\". Nobody wins! We are brainwashed people. This is not natural to treat children this way. And by the way, My 23 year old son, chose to work on a road crew and makes more money then the so-called educated people and he\'s already a foreman! I\'m proud of him and It\'s insulting that someone with a piece of paper that learned to kiss... thinks they are superior. Kids, I\'m with you, don\'t lose hope and maybe more of us adults will wake up and change things for you one day! Cheers :)

Hey im sixteen and im going into my third year of high school. I just can't stand homework either. I had to go into a program just to get it done at school so i dont skip it. Although before that it was especially hard considering I almost never sleep at night im writting this comment at 4:15 in the morning by the way so i could almost never go to sleep afterwords. It's just annoying and i hear all my friends saying they hate their teachers calling them "fat", "rude" and cursing their name. I like school but that might only be because im gettting help doing my homework in time. I dont want people to hate school It's just to bad the school system probobly wont ban homework. (sigh)...Oh and its summer so dont worry if im up to late come to think of it some nites i dont even sleep oh well.

i am 11 and i stay up 'til 12 am or even 1am doing homework some nights and i hate that and not just school stuff either in korea which is apparently where i am people go to places called 'hagwons' which is where you go to get 'extra education' and other than that i take math lessons and history lessons and art lessons and swim lessons in the summer. ok so maybe i procrastinate a little bit but hey, it's not easy being the eldest 'brilliant' daughter of ambitiouos parents whose goal for the next year and a half is to put her in international middle school. so in conclusion i HATE homework even more than i hate my brother. if there was no homework i would be free to ride my casterboard and squish bugs all day long. i like school all right coz my teacher's real nice and doesn't give us THAT much homework and a late expiration date. but i hate those 'hagwon' places which is the result of too-ambitious moms in korea. i go to at least one every day except sundays and including private tutors and lessons i go to 7 places. list:
english (like i need it-soo mucj hwk)
writing (barely any but takes up lotsa time)
math (most hwk)
history (not so much)
art (none)
debate (i am DOING it mom-moderate)
tennis (none)

ok so maybe tennis woouldn't be considered boring.

I STILL H8 HHW
3 reasons why hwk is bad by alfie kohn (look up in wikipedia)
children's frustration, exhaustion, etc.
no pros
absence of value most of the time

i think i like that guy!!

so if anyone agrees with me or also live someplace with lots of hagwon places or like school outside of school or lots of tutors and hwk my email is:
lizzydagenius@gmail.com
laughinlizzy89@yahoo.com

note that i am 11 yrs old

and i agree completly with ryan d person waayyyy above me
