How to Survive High School

Have you ever felt like school is just a waste of time. Are you not doing so well in school. If you answered yes, then you are in the right place. This is your key to surviving in high school.

There are many problems that almost every kid had, or will have faced in high school. I myself have had problems too, which is why I am sharing my guide to survive school.

Some basic problems are not getting your homework in, you don't understand the material, you have a bad teacher or you are getting bad grades on tests and quizzes. Don't worry, I will tell you the way. For those of you who are in athletics, don't worry, because I am an athlete too, and this guide worked for me too. If you are interested, keep reading.

Not Getting in Your Homework?

Everyone had at least one or two homework assignments that they missed because they just didn't have enough time. If this happens to you constantly, then read my tips. This problem usually happens because you do not understand the material, or you are on a tight schedule. If you do not understand the material, ask the teacher in class before leaving. That almost does the trick every time, and leaves you with confidence. Also, try asking you peers during your lunch period, or even ask your homeroom teacher. They almost always have the answer. If you get the material, but you are on a busy schedule, then check this out. For you athletes, it is still possible to do homework every night and still have some free time. Anytime you are not doing anything, study, or do your work. This may not seem like much, but actually, you more time just standing around than you think. Try doing some work while eating. The food gives you some “brainfood” and you can enjoy your homework while you are eating. If these things don't work, then try doing half your homework after school, and go to bed early, and wake up earlier, and do the rest then. You will find it a lot easier to think now that you had a good nights sleep. Try doing some last minute assignments during your lunch period or during your homeroom and study hall.

Not Understanding The Material?

For those of you who don't just get the material covered in class, follow these guidelines. Keep trying, and don't give up is the first thing you should do. If that doesn't work, then try getting some help from your friends from class, or your teacher. This always works because your friends will do a lot so you can stay on track in school. The teacher is like your gold medal. Anything wrong, they will make sure you understand the material. Try making an appointment before or after school, and they will help you until you understand. Teachers unavailable? No problem! Ask your parents for some help, and since they are your parents, they will make sure you get the work. Any other miraculous reason why you can't get help, try the internet. There are many websites that can help, just Google it, or go to your school homepage. The internet is the number one source for information.

Do You Have a Bad Teacher?

This is a very common problem that can lead students to failing in class. If you encounter a bad teacher, go to your counselor, the dean, the principle, or another nice teacher. They are there to get through your high school career. When in doubt, for you athletes, try talking to your coach. Most coaches are also teachers, and if you are lucky, they might have specialized in the subject that you are having trouble on. Talk to your parents about your problem, or even talk to your friends. Sometimes, your friends have tips on how to survive Mr. Meany, or Mrs. Unfair. If you can, even talk to the bad teacher yourself, and tell them about your problem. As mean as he/she could be, he/she is still your teacher, and may take your problem into consideration, and change the way he/she teaches.

Scoring Badly on Test and Quizzes?

If you just can't pull that B or A on a test or quiz, then it may be because you don't understand the material, you can't find time to study, or you are one of those students who understand the material, but choke when it comes to the actual test. If you don't understand the material, read the tips from section 3 of the guide. If you can't find time to study, then read the tips from section 4. If you get nervous while taking tests, read on. As smart as you are, there is still the mental part of you that has to be educated. Don't let problems anywhere else interfere with your studies. You must train your mind to stay calm, or else you will never feel confident while taking exams. The best thing you can do is to imagine positive thoughts, and to not worry about the grade you will get. Once you get that step down, make sure you eat a good breakfast in the morning, and make sure you get a good night sleep. Next step; look over any vocabulary words or anything that you feel is good to know for the test. Getting in last minute studying can really improve your performance on a test or quiz. Finally, during the test, don't give up. Keep trying, think as hard as you can, and DO NOT RUSH! Take your time, breathe every now and then, and think positively. If you really can't answer a question, circle the number, and come back to it later. Sometimes, other questions provide you with hints to answer other questions. So read the questions thoroughly first, and write down notes on the sides of the exam, or on a scratch paper. Once more important thing. KEEP YOUR TEST AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE!! This will give you more space to write, and the teacher will have less trouble grading. Don't use a pen, this never works; use a pencil and a good eraser that doesn't make smudge marks when you erase.

This guideline was meant to help you survive school. Please, if you still have issues, try using my tips to generate new ones. I might have missed something that could have helped you out. That's all I have for you now. I hope you enjoyed the read, and good luck in school.

George,

I am a former teacher and I find your article very helpful for all students. I especially like the fact that you encourage your peers to go to their teacher for help. Sometimes kids are afraid to do that for whatever reason but I know that most teachers want their students to be successful and are more than willing to help someone who comes to them. I also think your test-taking suggestions are very powerful!
