Reading assignments are usually as bad as you believe they will be. I learned this freshmen year. I was assigned The Cather and the Rye and I thought it would be awful so I suffered through the first three or four pages before I closed the book and gave up. Needless to say the test was really interesting. As we talked about it in class I realized i wanted to read this book. If it wasn't a assigned I might have read it in an hour, two tops. It sounded good. As it was, it was not my choice, it was assigned and so i didn't want to read it.
This happens alot with assigned book. You have to look at it differently, step back and re-examin the text. On the outside snow falling on ceders is a story about a japanese guy. However when you look at it and really examin it, it's a story of love and betrayal, of wartime hatred and of discrimination.
I know some people who'll say "I just don't read." But you do. You read magazines right? You're reading this? You read things you like, you just haven['t found a book you like yet. Truth is, you have to read, if you don't you'll end up in front of important people trying to pronounce island phonetically off a prompter. I've seen it happen, not pretty. You want people to think you're smart then you have to read the books in class, bottom line. You can't pass the test otherwise no matter how many cliffnotes you collect.
Find the part of the book you like and concetrate on it. When another part comes up think about how it ties to the part you like. for example, snow white, say you only like it because it has an apple in it (it could happen) but then the dwarves are singing and the whole mirror thing is happening and you just sitting there goigng "where's the apple!" Just think, eveytime the witch get's angry at the mirror she gets closer to the apple. This way you can stay focused and you can tie the book up easily for a report.
So that's all I have to say. Remeber, sometimes you have to look at it as more than what you have to do. Want to do it. You'll finish the book.
You hate the assignments you put it off and watch the movie. It's boring and long and really it's not helping anyone. So what's up with those stupid assigned books anyways? Here's some advice for getting through reading assignments from a fellow teen.,
Good Luck!
