University/college education is one of the factor that contributes in achieving a successful career. Here are some tips on how to choose and apply to a college or university for your higher education.
Top rank uni?
Don't stick on applying to a top rank university/college. Some universities have high positions in the university rankings in the region or in the world, but you have to match it with the major that you'd like to take. For example you're taking engineering, and you're planning to apply to University A because University A stands in the first rank in the region. It is not wise to do so, because University B, which has a lower position in the ranking, may be better in delivering the engineering course compared to University A. You should go for a university that is best in your preferred course, don't only consider the ranking.
Entry requirements
When you already have a list of universities best in your preferred course, find out their entry requirements such as: prerequisite subjects at high school, minimum marks per subject, portfolio, essay, recommendation letter, or any additional requirement such as SAT or TOEFL/IELTS score (especially for foreigners studying in English speaking countries). You are advised to prepare for all the requirements as early as possible, and you may ask help from your teachers or other concerning people that can help you in your application.
Know your budget
When you feel that you're already thorough with the entry requirements for the short-listed universities, start finding out how much it will cost to attend the college. It is advised to calculate the total cost of studying till you finish the course (normally four years). You can find out the tuition fees, book and miscellaneous fees from the university itself (website, brochures, or contact the university directly). If you plan to study out of town/country, you need to calculate your cost of living (food, transport, daily needs, accommodation, etc) also. Estimated inflation can be included in the cost calculation as well. With the help of online college cost calculator you can find out how much your university/college education will cost, in an easier way. When you already have an idea of how much they'll cost, discuss this with your parents or guardian.
If they feel that they can afford it, there's no problem for you, but if they feel that the cost is unaffordable, you need to revise your plan, rematch your course with the university/college that is affordable for you yet is having good qualities and is good in your preferred course. It may be quite difficult to find such a good match but such university is definitely present. Otherwise, it's time for you to look for part time jobs that can help your parents in covering your education cost. You may also apply for scholarships or grants (which are based on both academic and non academic field) and even loans (if you're eligible and if loans are available).
Prepare yourself
You know which university/college, you know what the entry requirements are, and you know how to finance your university/college education. Next is to prepare yourself to satisfy the entry requirements. If you feel your marks are not enough to give you a safe place in the application, then you need to work harder. If necessary, invite tutors to prepare you for better marks, or take extra classes that may help you later, such as, if you're planning to take graphic design at university/college, taking basic art and design classes may be a help. If you need to take some additional examinations such as TOEFL/IELTS, SAT, GMAT, ACT, etc, it is advised for you to take up tutorials or buy books/any media which contain guide, sample papers, and test practices for that. Start developing your essays, and ask for help from your teachers if necessary. An essay usually reflects how the writer views things and his/her language quality. This often plays a quite significant role in determining whether you'll be accepted or not. Portfolio (for some courses, for example art and design) may be necessary for the university to have an idea regarding your skills and capabilities in the field you are applying for, if they think that you're skilled enough in the field, you may be given exemptions for some subjects. This can save your cost and time studying in the university/college. Last but not least, good recommendation letters from the school board, usually issued by principal and teachers, will give you a plus point and helps you in having a greater chance to get accepted.
Apply with ethics
When you've satisfied all the steps to apply for university/college, it's time to actually send your applications, either by post or online, and wait for the reply. Make sure you fill all the necessary fields in the form, follow the rules in filling the form (for example, it is a must for the applicants to fill the form in block letters). Write each and every detail clearly, including your contact information. In sending the application, it is advised to send it immediately after the application is opened, so that there won't be too much crowd yet in the admission department, and your application can be reviewed earlier. You have to write the address of the university/college as well as your own address clearly. If you are then short-listed for an interview, come to the interview with decent outfits, be polite and courteous. Never hesitate to shake hands with the people who will interview you, greet them politely and answer each of their questions truthfully using decent language. When the interview is finished, say thank you and leave your room after shaking hands once more.
Hopefully those tips above can be useful and can lead you to a successful application.
