A style of dress that's been popular since the 1970's is still alive and well today, almost forty years later. This style is not for the fainthearted or the demure. Punk fashion originally developed in the 1970's as a counterculture movement meant to express shock and rebellion. It's gradually been transformed over the years to become a bit more sedate and has been kept alive by singers such as Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne. Although this style of clothing may not appeal to those over the age of twenty, it's a great look to wear to a costume party. Some of the principles of punk fashion can also be modified to create unique personal fashions with a bit of an edge. Here's how to dress punk:
Skinny jeans are a must
Slim, straight legged jeans are a must if you want to dress punk. Tuck them into black boots and add a chunky leather jacket for a look that's perfect for a music concert or other outdoor event. If you want to create even more of a statement, embellish your jeans with well chosen graffiti to flash your message across to the world. You don't have to restrict your jean colors to blue or black. Think of brightly colored neon jeans in shades of pink or even brilliant red tucked into black combat boots with your black leather jacket.
Express yourself with t-shirts
Get your message out to the world by wearing a t-shirt that expresses your philosophy. Emblazon your message across the front of your muscle shirt and don't be afraid if it has a few tears or rips. They only add to the character of the shirt and your message. Vintage t-shirts from punk rock bands such as Iggy Pop and Joe Strummer are also good alternatives.
Black tights are versatile
Every punk fashionista should have a pair of black tights in their closet. They pair nicely with a mini-skirt, black combat boots, and a graphic t-shirt. Strap on a belt with metal studs. Kelly Osbourne couldn't do it any better. Never mind if there's a rip or two in your tights, it just adds to the cool factor.
Go for bold, graphic prints
When you tire of black, put on bold, graphic prints and polka dots in bright, neon shades to accent your jeans. Bold prints make as much of a statement as black. If you can't find what you're looking for, buy a plain white shirt and go to work with cans of spray paint to create your own bold, abstract design and unique message.
One of the best places to get unique punk clothing is at your local thrift store. If what you find doesn't quite make the statement you want to make, use scissors, spray paints, and iron-on emblems to make it punk. It's all about self expression.
Whether you want to dress punk in your every day life or just for a costume party, punk clothing is never mainstream or boring. It makes a statement and unique impression all its own.
