Astronaut Facts

A couple of facts about astronauts.

What do astronauts eat?

Astronauts can eat fruits, nuts, peanut butter, chicken, beef, seafood, candy, brownies, etc... Some foods require water added. Drinks range from coffee, tea, orange juice, fruit punches and lemonade. How does food work in zero gravity? Food works very funnily. The food floats in the air and is fun to play with.

How do we accomplish breathing in the vacuum of space?

The life support systems aboard the International Space Station provide oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and manage vaporous emissions from the astronauts themselves. How do you make oxygen from water? You can make oxygen from water through a process called electrolysis. How do they plan to keep their air “clean”? They use the Life Support System which prevent gases like ammonia and acetone, which people emit in small quantities, from accumulating.

What problems could result from chemicals in the air? If ammonia and acetone accumulate then they could get the astronauts sick and vaporous chemicals from science experiments are a potential hazard, too, if they combine in ways with other elements in the air supply.

How is water brought to the station, how is it recycled?

The Russian module Zarya is packed with water containers that were carried over from the Space Shuttle during assembly missions earlier. The water is recycled and reused when the people in the station exhale or sweat the vapors add to the cabins humidity, which is eventually condensed and returned to the general water supply. How is water lost? None of the water is lost it is all reused and recycled.

How do astronauts deal with sleeping, hygiene, clothing, work and fun time?

Sleeping is dealt attaching themselves to a wall, a seat or a bunk bed inside the crew cabin so they don't float around and bump into things. The astronauts have the same hygiene needs as people on Earth. They brush their teeth, wash their hair, go to the bathroom, and shave, but due to the micro gravity environment, they use different methods to take care of themselves.

The crew members get to choose a casual work outfit for during the day, a suit for formal events during the night, a launch suit, a work suit, a space suit, a spring outfit, a swim suit, a fall work uniform, and a winter coat, depending on the length of the mission. It is not always work and no play. Astronauts take a break from their busy schedules to have fun and look out the window, play with your food or tease your crew mates once in awhile.

What would happen if an astronaut took off his or her helmet in the vacuum of space?

The air from inside the suit would be sucked out causing it to shrink and the astronaut would most likely die if he or she doesn't get the helmet back on.

Do astronauts need exercise?

The crew needs to exercise at least once a day to maintain cardiovascular and muscular systems for its eventual return to Earth.

What does it take to become an astronaut?

  1. Understanding and appreciating both your ethnic, cultural and American history.
  2. Physically fit.
  3. You must be a legal adult.
  4. A degree in math, science, or engineering.
  5. Knowing how and being able to work as a team player.
  6. Maintaining a grasp on current events.

What kind of training does an astronaut have to go through? Astronauts go through vigorous training to be able to survive the difficult conditions in space.
