Only twelve men have ever walked on the moon. To explore space these men had to take their atmosphere with them. Earth atmosphere is 20% oxygen and 80% nitrogen and at 75 miles above the surface that changes.
At 63,000 feet above the earth astronauts must wear special spacesuits to provide the correct atmosphere and pressure. At that altitude bodily fluids would boil without the artificial maintenance of pressure. Their spacesuits were the only thing that kept these pioneers of space travel alive.
Neil Armstrong
Neil A. Armstrong was a member of the Apollo 11 crew as he walked on the moon in July 1969.
Charles Peter Conrad
Charles Peter Conrad was commander of the Apollo 12 mission and the third man to walk on the moon.
Alan Shepard
Alan Shepard walked on the moon as commander of the Apollo 14 mission. He was originally due to go on the ill fated Apollo 13 mission but was unfit because of an ear infection.
David Scott
David Scott commanded the lunar landing of Apollo 15 in 1971. This was his third space flight.
John Young
John Young was an Apollo 10 and 16 astronaut. He drove 16 miles on the moon's surface in the lunar rover.
Eugene Cerman
Eugene Cerman was the last man on the moon in 1972. For the time being his famous boot print will be the last evidence of man's visit to the moon.
Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin
The picture shows Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. Note the shadow which indicates where the sun is. He was the second man on the moon on July 20st 1969.
Charles Duke
Charles Duke explored the highlands of the moon with John Young, a fellow crew member of the Apollo 16 mission in 1972.
Harrison Schmidt
Harrison Schmidt was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 17. He was involved in mapping the moon and performing geological surveys in his capacity as a geologist. No other geologist has set foot on the moon.

Edgar Mitchell
Edgar Mitchell was part of the crew of the Apollo 14 mission. He is also famous for these words while being interviewed on a radio program (1996) :
'There is certain evidence that simply doesn't fit with our model of how the moon is put together.'
James Irwin
James Irwin was command module pilot for the fourth manned lunar landing as part of the Apollo 15 crew. This mission took 295 hours and 11minutes.
