First of all, I am a Carolina Tarheel fan. I love basketball. Then how in the world did I discover the art of Duke University? It’s a long story. It all started with a photo that I saw in Google’s images when I was searching for program covers. I found a very interesting picture of Duke and Carolina. It was a picture of the Duke Blue Devil getting ready to have a feast. He had a big bowl of Tarheel Ram in his hand. The looks of that picture made me want to share it with a friend that was a Duke fan. She was a fan that was kind of down, and I wanted to see her smile. So, I printed it out just for her. I know that I may not sound like the ordinary. Other Tarheel fans probably would not do that for a Duke fan, but I am a Carolina fan who did. We were enemies for the fact that we were cheering for different teams. However, a game is just a game. People caring for one another is far more real.

Discovering the art of Duke lead me to memories of the Wolfpack (NC State). The Wolfpack makes me think of my brother, Brian Nobles, who graduated from NC State in about 2001. When we were much younger, we debated about who would win between UNC Tarheels and the Wolfpack every college basketball season. We sat in the same room to watch basketball, and there was a lot of tension. We watched every Carolina and State game no matter what team it was that was playing against them. Sometimes I walked out before the end of the game when I knew the Tarheels were loosing. Brian would joke me about it.

I remember us watching basketball in separate rooms. There was a time or two when Brian just turned the television off when State was loosing. When State did not make it to the final four, my brother would watch hoping Carolina would not make it to number one. I watched hoping that they would. Now, I kind of wish that NC State would win a championship game because there was so much more competition between Duke, Carolina, and State when they were winning. It got to the point that it was always competition between just Duke and Carolina. I miss NC State making me and my brother give each other a hard time. I miss those Carolina and NC State debates we had.
I can also remember an old friend of my mother’s that would call just to see what me and my brother were up to. He was a Duke fan. His wife claimed he could not watch the ball game while eating. The peas would fall off of his fork with his eyes on the television and his mouth was wide open. Whenever Duke lost, he was quiet and upset all the day long. That’s when me and my brother became friends again. We both hated seeing a bunch of spoil rotten and loud blue-painted fans of Duke. We loved seeing the Duke team loose.
These are my memories of Carolina, Duke, and State. I really enjoy the art of Duke from the past because Carolina and Wolfpack were included. Duke’s art brought these old memories back to me. I’m hoping to see some art from Carolina, and I’m sure Wolfpack fans wish the same from NC State.
