You will need:
- An undamaged nose, ear or eye
- Basic Canon Of Beauty knowledge
- A Pen and paper
- Tape measure or ruler
Using the Canon of Beauty is the key element of Restorative Art for every Funeral Professional. Knowing the measurement of the nose, eyes or an ear that is undamaged will aid in finding the mouth width.. Using Restorative Art in your preparation room is essential for a successful open casket.
First measure from the outer canthus to the inner canthus of the same eye and write this down for future use. This measurement is 1/2 the width of the mouth.
Now measure from the base of the nose from a lateral edge of the nasal wing on one side to the other side and take down on paper to use later.
Measure the length of the ear from the top to the bottom of the lobe. Now write down your answer for reference.
If you are using the measurement from step 1, multiply by 2. This will give you the width of the mouth. If X represents your measurement, you would use: Xx2= mouth width
If you are using the measurement from step 2, multiply by 2 and this is also equal to the width of the mouth from corner to corner. Xx2= mouth width
If using measurements obtained in step 3, multiply by 2 for the correct measurement of the width of the mouth. Xx2= mouth width
Remember that the Canon of Beauty states that the width of the mouth is one eye wide, 2 nose widths wide, or 1/3 the length of the ear.
