Seven Great Musicals

These musicals are stunning and bring excitement to those who can see the show and hear the music. A must see.

There are several musicals out there. These are just a few of the most commonly known. In other words, they're the more popular ones.

The Phantom of the Opera 

This takes place in France at an opera house. A mysterious phantom dwells in the opera house, teaching Christine, a stage dancer, to sing. Her career takes a turn for the better. At the same time, she meets up with her childhood sweet heart, Raoul, whom she falls in love with. The Phantom becomes jealous and fights for Christine. He would stop at nothing to receive her

The Sound of Music 

In Austria, years before the reign of the Nazis, Maria is on her way to becoming a nun. However, she can't seem to keep her mind on what she's supposed to be doing. The Reverend Mother decides to give her some time outside of the abbey to decide what she wants to do with her life; she is sent to a General who is need of a governess for his seven children. Maria enters this strict military army and brings the joy of music into their life. Then the Nazis enter Austria.

Hairspray 

The hit TV show on the air is the “Corny Collins Show”! Tracy longs to be a member of “Nicest Kids in Town” who sing and dance on the show. She also dreams of being the girlfriend of the lead male singer and dancer for the Nicest Kids in Town, Link. In detention, by chance she meets a group of Negro kids who star on the Corny Collins Show's Negro Day. She also meets Link. With Link's help, she is able to become a member of the show. However, she then realizes that there is segregation and wants to end it. She risks her new career to fight against the segregation that had now separated her from her new friends.

Grease 

Danny, a greaser, goes on vacation at the beach and meets a sweet girl named Sandy. They instantly fall in love, but they live away from each other. Yet, plans change and Sandy surprisingly ends up at Danny's school. However, due to the need to impress his friends, Danny acts differently with Sandy. Heartbroken, she turns to her friends who suggest she should change instead of him. The two of them have to fight the peer pressure given to them in order to keep the love they have for each other.

Chicago 

Roxie longs to be a stage singer, just like the famous Velma Kelly. That night Velma is sent to jail for murder. Roxie was cheating on her husband with a man that promised that he could get her a career in the singing business. When he proves to be a fake, she kills him. Roxie is sent to jail where she meets other women, who all murder a man because “he deserved it”. In order to get out of jail, Roxie hires a lawyer who is skilled in deceiving the court jury and judge. However, she has to learn to act. In the process, she befriends Velma. Together, they would plan their escape from prison.

Wicked 

Elphaba goes to a school where she dorms with Glinda. The two eventually become friends have small adventures throughout their school year. Eventually, Elphaba's armless younger sister, whose red shoes give her the ability to walk normally, comes to attend as well. Elphaba eventually falls in love with a man named Fiyero, who turns out to own a castle in the west. One day Fiyero is murdered. Elphaba swears to do what she can for him. She heads to the west, abandoning her throne of power in the east, although it was her birth right. Her sister takes the throne and names herself the Wicked Witch of the East. Glinda returns home in the north and marries, becoming the Good Witch of the North. Elphaba goes to Fiyero's castle and cares for his family, but once she was gone, the wizard seized the entire family. Elphaba declared herself the Wicked Witch of the West.

Mamma Mia 

Sophie lives with her mother on an island, and she's getting married! Sophie longs that her father could give her away at her wedding, but doesn't know who he is. She reads her mother's old diary and finds three possible dads. Inviting them all to her wedding, she hopes that she'll be able to discover which one is her father. Her mother is shocked when they arrive at the island. The goes through all sorts of awkward situations and odd troubles. Sophie, in the mean time, still struggles with finding her dad, especially when all three of them believe themselves to be her father!

These musicals were a great hit for those who have seen them. I would recommend all of them. Afterall, I did write this article.  I hope you enjoyed this little sample of such great musicals.
