What Exactly is Digital Photography?

Digital Photography is defined as a form of photography that uses digital technology to make digital images of subjects.

It used to be for years that film photography was the most popular type of photography in the world. Now as you may or may not have it digital photography is surpassing or rather has surpassed film cameras very quickly. Not only are digital cameras versus film cameras more practical and convenient but its all you see now a days in stores all across the world! Digital photos can be displayed, printed, stored, edited, transmitted, and archived using digital and computer techniques, without chemical processing unlike film cameras.. Digital photography first started in 1991 when Kodak released the first professional digital camera system aimed at photojournalists, it was a Nikon F3 Camera with a 1.3 mega pixel sensor.

Since then the digital photography history, and digital photographer cameras have gotten a lot more advanced than that old 1.3 mega pixel camera that's for sure! Now we see cameras offering 16 mega pixels, and more options than a person can count! Some of the biggest brand names in digital photography now are Nikon, Olympus, Sony, and Canon. They offer some really incredible cameras and most of the time they let you know just how incredible they are or think they are by the price tags they put on these cameras.

With digital photography comes the almost extinction of film cameras, courses and resources. But frankly if I were a little older and a little less techy I would have really enjoyed trying to use a film camera back in the day when it was the popular thing to do. Some hobbyist say that there's absolutely nothing like a Black & White photo from a film camera, but the tech in me says otherwise. Digital cameras can do anything you want them to do, well almost anyway. Want a good old black and white? How about the ability to make a photo look old and faded? Or crinkled? Digital Photography has all these and much more. But this isn't to say people don't still own film cameras, because they do.

In fact a lot of professional photographers, especially the old school photographers, not only have a few digital cameras that they own, but they also have a few of their film cameras that they still use to this day. I guess one of the most popular film cameras I still hear about to this day would have to be the old and reliable 35mm Pentax. This definitely isn't the end of film cameras by far but pretty darn close. The mere numbers show us how quickly digital photography is taking over film photography. Want proof? Unfortunately I don't have specific numbers for digital camera owners versus film camera owners but if you do go to Google and search for "Digital camera owners" and "Film camera owners" you'll get your numbers, and oh so much more! Here are some quick numbers for you, tho they are a bit broad since these pages aren't just "owners" oh cameras, they are just generalizing. But I'm still pretty curious so here we go:

Digital Camera: 123,000,000

Film Camera: 15,300,000

Buy Film Camera: 1,580,000

Buy Digital Camera: 25,800,000

Film Photography: 8,870,000

Digital Photography: 31,300,000

Needless to say, the numbers for digital photography versus film photography are quite a bit higher, and they are reaching higher numbers every single day. I hope for the sake of history, that film cameras don't go out of style altogether, but with anything else in life were going to just have to wait and see!
