Three Amazing Homes for the Future

Three wonderful eco-friendly, low impact homes that people built themselves for a very low cost. No bills to pay, and no damage to the environment, but amazing houses.

There are so many indicators at the moment that we're not going to be able to continue with our high-paced, expensive, resource-consuming lives for many more generations. Just look at the state of the economy and the pressures caused by global warming for an idea of how bad things are getting. If we want to save our planet and the futures of subsequent generations, we're going to have to change the way we live.

Some people have done just that.

Take this amazing house built entirely by one family in Wales, by hand, for simply £3000! Although reminiscent of a hobbit house, it's cute, sturdy and eco-friendly. Rather like hobbits, really…

The house uses the natural resources around it, such as rain water and solar energy, breaking away from a need for fossil fuels. Who would have thought living in the woods in a house you built yourself could be this cosy?

Another amazing, environmentally friendly dwelling is this roundhouse, built by Tony Wrench and June Faith. This structure looks like something out of the distant past, but despite that it has modern conveniences such as electricity and hot water.

This earth-sheltered house in Cumbria is similarly low impact. Because it is semi-underground, it is warmer in winter, and cooler in summer.
