The Burgos Cathedral is a Gothic-style cathedral situated in Burgos, Spain. It was constructed and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is famous for it's vast size and the very unique architecture. Following French Gothic parameters, the construction of The Burgos Cathedral started in the year 1221.
Very important alterations were made to this cathedral in the 15th and 16th centuries. Although the cathedral has some Renaissance and Baroque works, it was built in Gothic style.
Famous works of some extraordinary artists are kept in this cathedral. These artists include The architects and sculptors of the Colonial family- Juan, Simn and Francisco, The sculptors - Gil de Silo, Felipe Vigarny , Juan de Anchieta, The sculptor and architect Diego de Silo, The painter Sebastiano del Piombo On October 31 of 1984, the cathedral was declared the as World Heritage Site by UNESCO and this makes this cathedral distinct among all the cathedrals of Spain. Some of the interesting elements of this cathedral are Papamoscas, which is a statue that opens it's mouth every hour with sounding of the bells, The Romanesque sepulchre of Mudarra, The carved chairs of the choir.
History
King Ferdinand III of Castile and the English-born Bishop of Burgos, Mauricio ordered the construction of this cathedral. The construction of this cathedral was started on July 20, 1221 on the site of the Romanesque cathedral which was present there earlier. It took nine years to complete the construction of the chevet. The high altar started in 1260 but it took 200 more years to restart the construction. The cathedral on whole was completed in construction in the year 1567. With the construction of lantern spire over the main crossing, the construction of the cathedral was said to have completed.
The architects of this cathedral were Frenchman in the 13th century and a German in the 15th century. In the year 1417, the bishop of Burgos who attended the Council of Constance, returned along with a master builder John of Cologne. He completed the construction of the towers with spires which were constructed with open stonework.
The most famous of the bishops of The Burgos Cathedral was Alphonsus a Sancta Maria who was a scholar and historian of the 15th-century. In the year 1919, Rodrigo Daz de Vivar and his wife Doa Jimena were buried in this cathedral. It was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on the 3rd of October, 1984.
