The shape of houses today tells me a little about what man has simplified during the years and it also tells me where we are going to go. Modification of the inside space has also been going on perhaps at an accelerated rate compared to the four walls that contain it. This may be largely due to renovating pre-existing spaces that offer solid walls and foundations but have new life breathed into them. Such are new condos that have arisen from former industrial plants that offers solidness plus high ceilings that are suitable for visual artists and people who want vertical space. There are trends for singles, couples and families wanting to use pre-existing spaces and then there are developments done on building the so-called intelligent home, something a kin to following commands on an electronic device or through voice. We have also gone a long way since electronics were used to tuck bars under counters and turn inside fountains on and off.
I just wanted to say that it all started from the need to create a home as an extension of what would protect man. That is after he made his big step away from the cave and into the sunlight. For similar means man has developed a line a clothes that would help him modify the effect of temperature on himself. There was a need to put up a structure, with diagonals in mind; he wanted an enclosure with points equidistant from himself on all for sides. It looked as if he had an innate sense of the cardinal points and wanted to set his home walls aligned to these points.
Today there are circular creations, rooms without corners that is. To interior decorators these create an environment of least resistance so that the person sitting in the middle is equidistant from any peripheral point. I haven't seen many of these types of homes go up though. I guess that because we are still stuck with the four sided room model, even though it means more building materials than that required building a circular room.
Different building types suit different personalities; a person who likes space will inadvertently seek out a larger floor plan or have his pre-existing space modified so as to maximize the amount of free space. Someone who wants to have all his appliances together will then have his kitchen space modified so that he does not have to step across the room to open a stove or refrigerator.
