Stop Motion Animation

Ever wandered how to make realistic animations, similar to "Wallace and Gromit", "Chicken Run" or "Shrek"?

Stop motion, is the creative way of making models move. These models often consist of plasticine, toys of clay. This type of animation is called stop motion.

The technique to making these is simple. Just place a model on a set, and take a frame (photo / shot) of it. Move the model a small bit, and take another frame. If this method is continued, the animator simply plays all the frames very fast, and it looks like the model is alive.

The great thing about this stop motion animation is that it's so cheap to use. Simply download a program, which is designed to make it easy, make a set, get a webcam, make some models and you are ready to go!

Famous stop motion shows aren't rare in the cinema. I'm sure we've all heard of Bob the Builder, he definitely can fix it! But wait! There's more. Wallace and Gromit won an award, and it was all thanks to stop motion.

Try this today! This isn't just a cheap way of making fantastic animations, this is technology. But, before you start, always plan. Be patient! 15 shots will create 1 second of animation, but the result will be superb.

Things to do before you start are develop a plot, simple enough, with witty jokes. Perhaps make a storyboard. This is a sequence of pictures showing the main action in the movement. This is a good step to planning out you movie.

Now that you're set, I wish you good luck, and good films!
