I do however, feel that they made a bad choice in the winner; I think that the runner up, "Heath" should be the winner, because I personally like more realistic paintings. The judges did not want to favor the dead any more than any other artwork, so it was not chosen.
The winning painting “You are what is most beautiful about me, a self portrait with Kell and Arella” is a very big painting, that could be used as an outstanding decorative artwork for a home, or building.
An example of a traditional artwork entered in the Archibald prize was called “Neil Finn” which was painted by Martin Ball. This artwork shows traditional painting styles because you cannot see the brushstrokes.
A contemporary artwork entered in the Archibald prize was called “Angelina Pwerle” which was painted by Ling Song. The painting is abstract and creates the effect as if it were made on a pixel computer.
The first Archibald prize was held in 1921, and has been a huge annual event since; the first winner was William B. Mcinnes who painted “Desbrowe Annear”. The Archibald Prize was started by a man called JF Archibald, who was modest and did not want fame.
Michelle Millar, mother of three, had this to say about the winner of the Archibald Prize, “It reminds me about a picture painted in the early 60's painted by somebody else, but I have only seen pictures of it in the paper.”
